Day 1: Fez – Ifrane – Cedar National Park – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert

The starting point of this tour is usually the airport of this city, although we can arrange any other place, such as a hotel. In any case, our staff will pick you up punctually to start the route at that very moment. It will be a Spanish-speaking driver at the wheel of a comfortable and private vehicle.

This way we will head south, and soon the Middle Atlas Mountains will appear before our eyes. This mountain range, with peaks exceeding 3,000 meters above sea level, is home to places worth visiting and admiring. For example, the city of our first stop: Ifrane. At a glance we will understand why it is known as the Moroccan Switzerland, because its green surroundings and its buildings with gable roofs evoke places typical of other latitudes, such as the European Alps.

The next point of interest of the route is the Ifrane National Park, which also receives two other popular names: the Park of the Cedars or the Forest of the Monkeys, as both are numerous here. And very representative of the country, by the way: these trees confirm a dense and huge green spot in the landscape and provide the perfect habitat for Barbary macaques, the only primate species north of the Sahara.

After getting to know this protected natural area, we will cross the Middle Atlas and, descending the southern slope, we will see how the landscape becomes more arid. It is the announcement that the desert is near, which we will reach by crossing the Ziz Valley. Following the natural route, which runs parallel to this small sheet of water, we will disembark in Erfoud, a small desert town that has gained international fame for the important fossils discovered here, some of them of dinosaurs.

And about 40 km beyond Erfoud, our road from Fez to the desert leaves the asphalt: in the town of Merzouga we will get on the back of camels for an excursion through the dunes of Erg Chebbi, which are among the most symbolic of the Sahara Desert. A ride of a couple of hours that will be unlike anything you have experienced before and will end at our tented camp.

Upon arrival, we will be welcomed with a Berber tea, as tradition dictates. And as night falls, an army of stars will appear in the sky, shining like nowhere else in the world, given the absence of light pollution and cloud cover. Undoubtedly, an unbeatable way to go to sleep, as you will spend the night in Berber tents in total comfort.

Day 2: Merzouga Desert – Khamlia – Desert Nomads – Merzouga Desert

On the second day of this circuit from Fez to the desert, we will live several experiences to remember. The first of them, the majestic sunrise over the dunes of Erg Chebbi, a spectacle of light and silence that is impossible to find elsewhere in the world.

After sunrise, we will have breakfast in the tents camp and move to Khamlia, better known as ‘the village of the blacks’.

In this village we will discover first hand an ancestral tradition: that of Gnawa music, performed by descendants of slaves from Sudan, brought here centuries ago. In their genes they carry, therefore, the percussion rhythms and the sensitivity for a tribal music that has received the distinction of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco. An honor that will be easy to understand when we witness live one of their performances.

Once the experience is over, we will get on our SUVs to travel along desert tracks used years ago by the racers of the Paris-Dakar rally. In this itinerary, we will pass through uninhabited French and Berber villages, as well as khol mines exploited decades ago to extract this precious raw material for the cosmetics industry. In addition, we will stop at a strategic and high point, from where we will observe the immensity of the dunes of Erg Chebbi.

There will still be time to visit a community of desert nomads who, despite being in the process of sedentarization, maintain uses and customs of their ancestors. We will make contact with them to tell us about their way of life in such an inhospitable terrain.

At the end of the day, we will return to our accommodation in a hotel in the desert of Merzouga, where dinner will be included and where the same sky shining with stars will bid us good night before going to sleep.

Day 3: Merzouga Desert – Fez

The third day of this circuit begins with the magic of waking up in the middle of the desert, in a unique accommodation where breakfast is included. And after that and after living two unforgettable days in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, it’s time to take the road back.

We will do it by the same route taken on the first day, in which we travel from Fez to the desert, but in this case in a more direct way, with the intention of reaching this Imperial City as soon as possible. In this way, you will have the afternoon free to take a first contact with it, in what will be a foretaste of the guided tour the next day. In the evening, you will sleep in a charming riad in the heart of the city center, where you will have all the monuments and places of interest close at hand.

Day 4: Fez – Airport

One of the advantages of this 4-day tour from Fez to the desert is that it offers plenty of time to visit this spectacular city, whose historic medina was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. So, after breakfast, you will meet our official local guide for a guided tour of the historic center.

Among the places that can be part of the itinerary are the Karaouine Mosque and University (considered one of the oldest in the world), the Nejjarine Square and its fountain, the Bou Inania Madrasa and other charming corners. In fact, it is one of the largest medinas in North Africa, so it has different neighborhoods, each with its own personality. In particular, the tanners. And the Mellah (Jewish quarter) or the Royal Palace, whose gilded bronze doors stand out, are other common stops for travelers with more stamina.

The itinerary will be adapted to the group and, in particular, to the time of the flight back home, normally scheduled for the afternoon. At the agreed time, our driver will pick you up for the transfer to the city’s airport. Our services will end at the terminal, although we will say goodbye in the hope of accompanying you again on a new tour of the country, either starting in Fez or in other cities such as Marrakech, Tangier or Casablanca.

Day 1: Fez – Ifrane – Monkey Forest – Middle Atlas – Ziz Valley – Erfoud – Desert of Merzouga

This 3 days tour from Fez to Marrakech starts at the place we agree. It can be a hotel in the city of Fez or even its airport, if you wish to leave as soon as you arrive in the country. Whatever the option is, you will be picked up by our English speaking driver with a comfortable and private vehicle for the whole circuit.

On this first day we will head south and that means heading towards the Middle Atlas. On the northern slopes of these mountains we will discover amazing places. For example, Ifrane, a city located at an altitude of more than 1,700 meters that is striking for its gabled buildings. The reason for this unusual resource in Morocco is the high frequency of rain and snowfall in winter. And all this has earned him the nickname of ‘the Moroccan Switzerland’.

Shortly after we will discover a protected natural area of enormous ecological value: the Ifrane National Park, also known as the National Park of the Cedars or the Monkey Forest. This is one of the few natural habitats where the Barbary macaque, the only primate species north of the Sahara and one of the most representative animals of the Moroccan fauna, survives in the wild. And also the only one accustomed to the cold climate, by the way. In fact, the large branches of the cedars are their best refuge in adverse weather conditions.

The next step of the day is to cross the Middle Atlas and, since the road begins its descent, we will cross the Ziz Valley in a very different environment: the aridity of the desert is already evident, with a landscape dominated by the stony hamadas. In this way we will reach Erfoud, a town famous for its rich heritage in fossils, and a little further on to Merzouga, which gives its name to the beautiful portion of the Sahara that we are about to enter.

Precisely in Merzouga we will take our dromedaries (replaceable by 4×4 vehicles) and head for the dunes of Erg Chebbi, embarking on a different and unforgettable excursion through this sea of fine golden sand. After a couple of hours drive, we will arrive at our tent camp in the middle of the desert, where we will be waiting with a Berber tea, as the local tradition dictates.

At nightfall, a spectacle difficult to see in other parts of the world will open above our heads: a sky sparkling with stars thanks to the lack of clouds and the non-existent light pollution. After that, dinner will be served at the camp and we will spend the night in traditional tents in the style of the desert nomads, but with all the comforts.

Day 2: Merzouga Desert – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

If the beauty of the sunset in the desert and the starry sky of the previous night were not enough, in the morning of this day you will have a third chapter of the beautiful light that characterizes the Sahara: the dawn. Getting up early to see it will be worth it and, after that, you will have breakfast in the tents camp. Then we will get back on the camels (or the jeep) to return to Merzouga and continue the route. We will also reserve time for a restorative shower in the camp or in a hotel in Merzouga according to the package contracted.

Back on the asphalt, the attractions are numerous on the second day of this 3-day circuit from Fez to Marrakech. The first of them is the peculiar town of Rissani: not only its beautiful medina is attractive, but also the popular atmosphere that surrounds it, with a busy local market and a donkey parking available in its surroundings.

After leaving Rissani behind, the route leads us towards the Dades Valley, between small villages, hamadas, arid elevations and palm groves that provide a pleasant greenery from time to time. One of the humble watercourses of this stretch is precisely the cause of the next natural area where we will stop: the Todra Gorges, a spectacular rocky canyon famous among climbers for its vertical walls, which in some points reach 200 meters high.

After admiring this unique environment, we will travel through the aforementioned Dades Valley, as well as the Valley of the Roses, where the cultivation and harvesting of this flower is the way of life of a large part of its population. The Berber fortresses are also part of the landscape in this section, as we are on the so-called Route of the Thousand Kasbahs. And in one of the small villages in the area we will stop our march to have dinner and spend the night in a charming riad

Day 3: Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – High Atlas – Marrakech

After starting the day with a good breakfast at the riad, we will continue the route by road on what will be the last day of this 3-day circuit from Fez to Marrakech. After leaving the Dades Valley, two Berber monuments worthy of being visited await us. The first, the kasbah of Taourirt, in the city of Ouarzazate, which until the twentieth century was the residence of the Sultan of the Atlas, of the powerful El Glaoui tribe. This will be easily understood by visiting its rooms, richly decorated in some corners of its interior.

And the second, even larger and more spectacular: the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village that was key in the caravan routes in the desert, between Marrakech and Timbuktu. Its contemplation from the surroundings is impressive, and so are the panoramic views from inside. It was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco for being one of the best examples of Berber architecture in adobe. And fans of the Game of Thrones series will recognize it because scenes from the third season were filmed here.

After visiting Ait Ben Haddou, the road will begin to gain altitude, as we will head to the Tizi n’Tichka pass, the main pass to cross the High Atlas, at about 2,200 meters altitude. From this point, we will begin our descent through a landscape of special beauty, between humble mountain villages and great panoramic views in which snow-capped peaks stand out most of the year.

And after covering the last kilometers of this road, we will put an end to this 3-day tour from Fez to Marrakech: our driver will drop you off at the agreed place, which can be a point in the center or the international airport, if your return flight is scheduled for that afternoon. Our services will end here, but with the hope that the farewell will be a ‘see you soon’ to meet again in another of the many tours we organize in Morocco.

Day 1: Fez – Ifrane – Monkey Forest – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert

This two-day desert tour from Fez starts wherever is most convenient for the group: from the airport if you wish to do it upon arrival, from the hotel if you are already staying in Fez or from any other location. In all cases, our Spanish-speaking driver will pick you up in a private vehicle and with the maximum comfort. And after that, we will start our route by road in a southerly direction.

The first big stop of this day is the town of Ifrane: located at an altitude of more than 1,700 meters in the heart of the Middle Atlas, it has an original mountain appearance, unique compared to the rest of Morocco. In addition to its order and cleanliness, its houses with gable roofs are striking, as required by the rains and snow that fall here in the wet season.

After briefly getting to know this town, we will enter the Ifrane National Park, popularly known as the Cedar Forest or the Forest of the Monkeys. This is so because it houses a huge expanse of trees of this species and because they live a large population of Barbary macaques. In fact, this is one of the few natural habitats where they survive, as they are in danger of extinction.

After that, we will cross the natural barrier of the Middle Atlas and in our descent we will link with the Ziz Valley, named after the humble but long river that vertebrates it. Following its course we will be noticing how the Moroccan desert is thrown over us, reaching Erfoud. This small town is famous for different reasons, mainly for its fossils, some of them of large dinosaurs, and for the production of marble. It has also served as a location for films with a desert atmosphere, such as The Mummy.

Shortly after leaving Erfoud, we will reach the last stretch of this desert excursion from Fez: it starts in Merzouga, a small town where we will change means of transport, as we will change from motor vehicles to traditional camels, used by the nomads of the desert since time immemorial (option replaceable by 4×4). In this way we will enter the dunes of Erg Chebbi, whose large formations of golden sand will envelop our view.

This unique excursion will end at the tents camp, where we will be waiting for us with a Berber tea, as tradition dictates, and where dinner will be served. In one of these traditional tents you will rest, but not before enjoying the breathtaking image of the starry sky above our heads, clean and shining unhindered by clouds and artificial lighting.

Day 2: Merzouga Desert – Fez

On this second day of desert excursion from Fez, it will be worth getting up early: we will be ready to watch the sunrise in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, a unique place to enjoy the first light of dawn. After that, we will have breakfast and return to Merzouga, again by camel ride (or 4×4, depending on the option chosen). Time will also be left for a shower, in a hotel in Merzouga or in the tents of the camp according to the package contracted.

The return route will be the same as the outward journey the day before to travel to the desert from Fez, but in this case there will be fewer stops in order to reach the city in the early afternoon. In this way, you will arrive in time to catch your flight back home or to enjoy the afternoon at leisure in this beautiful city, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

At the agreed place, we will say goodbye with gratitude for the trust placed in us and with the hope of doing other tours or excursions like this one, heading to the desert from Fez or to other natural paradises of the country.
