Itinerary

Your journey begins with an early departure from Fes at approximately 7:30 AM, giving you a full day to discover the region’s highlights. Traveling west, you’ll make your way to the ancient Roman city of Volubilis—a scenic drive of about an hour and a half. By 9:00 AM, you’ll arrive at one of Morocco’s most remarkable archaeological sites.

Once the empire’s southernmost frontier, the ruins of Volubilis are exceptionally well preserved. As you walk through the remains of grand basilicas, intricate mosaics, and the iconic triumphal arch, you’ll be immersed in the splendor of Roman antiquity.

Next, a short drive brings you to Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, one of the holiest towns in Morocco and the final resting place of Moulay Idriss I, founder of the country’s first Islamic dynasty. While non-Muslims cannot enter the mausoleum itself, the town’s spiritual essence is palpable as you wander through its winding streets.

From a nearby hilltop, enjoy sweeping views of the town and surrounding landscapes. Take a relaxing break at a local café with a glass of traditional mint tea before continuing your adventure.

By midday, you’ll make your way to Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities, located just 30 minutes from Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Renowned for its rich history and impressive architecture, Meknes served as the capital of Morocco under Sultan Moulay Ismail. Upon arrival, you’ll begin your visit at the magnificent Bab Mansour, an elaborately decorated gateway that marks the entrance to the old medina. Just beyond, you’ll find the lively Hedim Square—a bustling center of local culture and daily life.

Continue your exploration with a stop at the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, where you can admire the refined design and peaceful ambiance of one of Morocco’s few religious sites open to non-Muslims. After visiting the city’s key landmarks, enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch at a local restaurant, where you’ll sample flavorful dishes such as tajine, couscous, and fresh seasonal salads.

In the early afternoon, you’ll leave the city behind and head into the Middle Atlas Mountains for a refreshing change of scenery. Your first stop is Ifrane, a picturesque town often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” thanks to its clean streets, alpine-style houses, and crisp mountain air. Take a leisurely walk through the town to see Al Akhawayn University and its beautifully maintained campus, or snap a photo with the famous Stone Lion—a beloved symbol of Ifrane’s distinctive charm.

Next, you’ll journey to the Azrou Cedar Forest, one of the largest and most scenic cedar woodlands in Morocco. This lush forest is also home to the Barbary macaques—wild monkeys that roam freely among the ancient trees. Enjoy a gentle stroll beneath the towering cedars, and with a bit of luck, you might catch a close glimpse of these playful creatures. The calm and cool atmosphere of the forest provides a welcome contrast to the day’s earlier urban sights.

As the afternoon comes to a close, you’ll begin your return to Fes at around 5:30 PM. The scenic drive back offers sweeping views of the Middle Atlas Mountains, giving you time to relax and reflect on the rich variety of experiences throughout the day. You’ll arrive in Fes by approximately 6:30 PM, just in time to unwind and enjoy your evening in the city.
