tours from MARRAKECH

Excursion to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate

Cross the magnificent Atlas Mountains to discover two of Morocco's most beautiful deserts. In an air-conditioned van, see canyons, palm groves and mountain villages. Cross the impressive Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass, at an altitude of more than 2260 meters.

Leaving Marrakech early, on our trip we will find beautiful landscapes and small villages built on levels that follow one another among oaks, walnut trees and oleanders (laurel flower). The road winds before reaching the spectacular Tizi n Tichka pass. We are now 2260 meters high. Once you pass, you discover a totally different landscape: the lunar landscape of the Anti Atlas and the plain beyond. The scent of thyme from the bushes fills the air. just after the pass, our itinerary turns to the left and we are on the old caravan route that used to carry the products so sought after in the court of the sultan. We soon reached Telouet. The ruins of the Pasha Palace dominate the village, a fortified citadel that is both a microcosm of an empire and its disappearance. He had managed to eclipse the sultan by controlling most of present-day Morocco and decided to erect a palace in the middle of nowhere, where his family originated. He had employed the most skilled craftsmen to build and decorate his main residence and, in his golden age, Christian armies, stables and slaves were confined within their walls while a flourishing Jewish community administered the nearby salt mines.leaving Telouet behind, the journey crosses Western antecedents to later find the cannon. The gardens by the riverbed merge into a giant green snake wedged between the brown ridges, only to escape into the horizon. The path follows the green snake and on the other side, carved into the canyon wall, the caves are still used to keep livestock or grain during the winter by semi-nomadic people in the area. Here and there, decaying kasbahs witness an era soon resolved. In the late afternoon it is time to visit Ait Benhaddou, the adobe citadel declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, a postcard. A fat red sun only underlines the yellowish tones of the mixture of mud and straw and, through the covered passages and the stone walls, the past filters into the present. Despite the local “guides”, it is best to get lost in their alleys. There is always a new way to reach your highest point, from where the snowy Atlas Mountains will take your breath away, if the climb had not already done so. Half an hour later, our journey crosses Ouarzazate. It has become famous for its film studios where scenes from “Game of Thrones” were recently filmed. With this background, you may want to ride a camel along the walls of the kasbah, next to the river bed. Later, the Oasis of Fint is a great example of life within an oasis, then we will start our way back across the High Atlas, this time on the national road, which was once a camel track that became a suitable road for vehicles in the 1030s with the help of the French Foreign Legion. The excursion meanders past steep valleys and peaks to descend to Marrakech later in the night. You are free to choose your departure time. However, to make the most of your day, we recommend that you leave before 8 am. The scheduled time of return to Marrakech is 7 or 8 pm.
