A journey through Morocco’s ancient history, spiritual sites, and natural beauty awaits just beyond Fes. On this one-day trip, you’ll discover the Roman ruins of Volubilis, visit the sacred town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, explore the imperial city of Meknes, and take in the serene landscapes of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Perfect for those looking to explore Morocco’s cultural heritage and natural splendor, this day trip offers a comprehensive experience of the country’s diverse attractions, all within a day’s travel from Fes.

Itinerary

Your adventure begins with an early morning departure from Fes at around 7:30 AM, ensuring you have a full day to experience the sights. You will head west toward the ancient Roman city of Volubilis, a journey that takes about an hour and a half. As you arrive at Volubilis around 9:00 AM, you’ll step into one of Morocco’s most treasured archaeological sites. These Roman ruins, once the southernmost outpost of the empire, are stunningly well-preserved. While walking through the remnants of basilicas, mosaics, and the iconic triumphal arch, you’ll be transported back to a time of grandeur and imperial power.

After exploring the ancient city, a short drive will take you to the nearby town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. This is one of Morocco’s holiest cities, being the final resting place of Moulay Idriss I, who founded Morocco’s first Islamic dynasty. Although non-Muslims cannot enter the mausoleum itself, you can still appreciate the spiritual atmosphere of the town as you stroll through its narrow streets and admire panoramic views from a nearby hilltop. A short tea break in a local café will allow you to relax and soak in the peaceful ambiance before continuing your journey.

By midday, you’ll head to Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities, located about 30 minutes from Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Known for its impressive architecture and historic significance, Meknes was once the capital of Morocco during the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail. Upon arrival, you’ll start with a visit to the majestic Bab Mansour, an ornate gateway that leads into the medina. From here, you can explore the bustling Hedim Square, which serves as a vibrant hub of local life. A visit to the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum offers insight into the grandeur of this once-great ruler. After taking in the main sights, you’ll enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch at a local restaurant, where you can savor dishes like tajine, couscous, and fresh salads.

In the early afternoon, you’ll leave Meknes and head toward the Middle Atlas Mountains for a change of scenery. Your first stop will be the picturesque town of Ifrane, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco” due to its neat streets and European-style chalets. Stroll through the town to see Al Akhawayn University and its striking campus, or take a photo with the famous Stone Lion, a symbol of Ifrane’s unique charm.

Next, you’ll continue to the Azrou Cedar Forest, home to one of the largest cedar forests in Morocco. The forest is also known for its Barbary macaques, wild monkeys that roam freely among the ancient trees. You can enjoy a gentle walk through the forest, and if you’re lucky, you may spot the playful monkeys up close. The peaceful atmosphere of the forest offers a refreshing contrast to the urban exploration earlier in the day.

As the day winds down, you’ll begin your return journey to Fes at around 5:30 PM. The scenic drive back offers sweeping views of the Middle Atlas Mountains, allowing you to reflect on the diverse experiences of the day. You’ll arrive back in Fes by approximately 6:30 PM, just in time to enjoy a relaxing evening in the city.

Included:

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley

Pick up from your accommodation in Marrakech at 8 o’clock in the morning, and depart to the High Atlas, Sof Moroccan Atlas mountains, going through Tizi N’Tichka port with stops for panoramic views and taking pictures of the Berber small villages that camouflage in the landscape. Then we continue south to the ksar (fortified village) of Ait Ben Haddou, where we will visit the famous Kasbah (declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986). Famous films have been shot on this spectacular stage, including Gladiator, Obelix, The Mummy, The Jewel of the Nile, Sahara with Penélope Cruz…etc. Free time for lunch in town. Then we continue to Ouarzazate, also known as “The gate of the desert,” which in the Berber language means “noiseless or without confusion.” Here we’ll see the Taourirt kasbah, one of the most spectacular ksars in Morocco. The next site to visit is the Rose Valley going through the big Skoura palm grove, a beautiful place to contemplate more than 700.000 palms and numerous kasbahs built in the surrounding area. Damascenes roses are raised in this Valley for cosmetic use, such as the valued rosewater. The Rose Festival is held here annually in May, an important museum for Moroccan culture. Finally, we reach the Dades Valley, where we’ll spend the night.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Merzouga – Camel Trek and overnight in Berber Camp

After breakfast, we’ll enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the Dades Valley from one strategic lookout in the mountains; from there, we can appreciate the great number of kasbahs and the scenic characteristics of each one. A very good asphalt road leads up the valley from Tinerhir to the gorge and the desert. After some stops on the way, we’ll reach the Todra Gorges. The scenery is spectacular. Local people live in the area and can be seen in their adobe villages. These gorges are popular among rock climbers thanks to their rock sides with many uneven surfaces. After a short walk in the Todra gorges, you’l have free time for lunch in Tinejdad or Touroug, and then we’ll continue our way to the desert to reach the spectacular dunes of Merzouga. We’ll take a camel ride of one hour to our nomad camp in the middle of a sea of dunes (Erg Chebbi). Before dinner, we’ll see the sunset at the top of a dune for then sleep in a tent under a beautiful starry sky.

Day 3 : Merzouga Dunes – Draa Valley – Anti Atlas Mountains – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

We have a “Date with the sunrise” very early in the morning. In the middle of the desert, waking up early is a “must do” to contemplate the most spectacular sunrise you’ve ever seen at the top of a dune close to the camp. Then we return to Merzouga on the camels, where a delicious breakfast awaits us. Having regained strength, we start our last trip day going through the arid pre-desertic area where we’ll meet the “acacia,” a typical tree of this landscape. It’s the longest river in Morocco, going through the country and reaching Mauritania. Our trip continues towards Ouarzazate going through the Anti Atlas. THE PREPARATION OF MOROCCAN TEA In Morocco, one of the usual customs is the preparation of tea, which is also served to guests as a sign of welcome and hospitality. It is usually prepared and served in front of the guests. Water is boiled and green tea is added, this first water is thrown away to wash the tea and diminish its bitter taste, then fresh mint leaves are added taking them to the bottom of the container, since if they float and remain on top, they will take a bitter taste, which the Moroccans call “burnt tea”. The sugar is added in a proportion of 20 lumps per liter and is not mixed with a spoon. Whoever serves it, transfers the tea from its glass to a teapot several times, finally it is poured into the glasses from a certain height to make it foam. The foam when serving it, is considered of good omen, since it is associated with luck and fortune.

In the Middle Atlas, as well as in the Ziz Valley and in the Rif region, certain canons of beauty have been developed in the Berber culture and not always coinciding with the Arab culture.
Since ancient times, the Berbers take care of their personal grooming with natural products that are within their reach, such as argan oil to take care of their hair softening it; and for the skin, rose water and ghasul (a kind of clay) to give radiance to the skin and henna to color the hair and tattoo hands and feet.
Feminine elegance in Berber women acquires its maximum appeal with other accessories such as tattooing drawings in the form of geometric signs to decorate the face and arms.
The symbolism of these tattoos varies according to the regions, in some cases they serve to distinguish the different tribes, or in others, to show that a girl has reached the age of puberty.
