Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Gorges
8 am we will meet at your Riad or hotel and drive over the port of Tizi n’Tichka (2,260 m above sea level), the highest mountain pass in Morocco. We will have time to stop and enjoy breathtaking scenery, have coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice while enjoying magnificent views of the mountains and Berber villages. We will take a guided tour of Ait Benhaddou, a World Heritage Site, one of the most spectacular ksours (fortified villages) in Morocco that was once on the route of trans-Saharan caravans as they crossed the Atlas to the fondouks of Marrakech. (This famous kasbah was used as a backdrop for more than 20 films). We will pass through the town of Ouarzazate and continue to the Valley of Roses (where roses bloom in April and May), the Skoura Palm grove with its authentic 17th century kasbah, the valley of a thousand Kasbahs and the Dades gorge. Dinner and overnight in a charming traditional hotel.
Day 2: Dades Gorges – Todra Gorges – Merzouga
Morning departure to the Sahara Desert (Merzouga) through the Todra Gorges, where you can take a walk to explore these magnificent narrow gorges where dizzying pink ochre cliffs frame a crystalline and fresh river. Then we will depart for Erfoud through the Touroug palm grove, where we will stop to eat. Then we arrive in the town of Erfoud to visit a local fossil craft workshop. Continuing with the fascinating dunes of Erg Chebbi, beautiful extension of undulating dunes, also known as the Dunes of Merzouga, which you will explore by camel.
Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate
If you get up early enough, you will be able to see the spectacular sunrise, when the color of the dunes and the shape of their shadows combine in an incredible view. We will continue our trip to Rissani, where we will walk through its famous souk, the most authentic and traditional, and the largest in southern Morocco, which sells all kinds of crafts, food and animals. We will continue to the Dra’a Valley through the village of Tazzarine (presented in the film “Babel”). We will leave for the wild desert for a picnic under the shade of an acacia tree (class of “wild cuisine” included). In the afternoon, the trip will take us along the ancient caravan route to discover the real Draa Valley, with its enormous palm trees and ancient villages. Our day ends in Ouarzazate. Dinner and overnight in a charming Riad.
Day 4: Ouarzazate – Telouet – Marrakech
After breakfast we continue our route along the Ounila Valley and only 40 km from the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, we will see the Kasbah of Telouet, an ancient route of the Sahara caravans over the Atlas mountains to Marrakech. It was the seat of power of the Glaoui family, King Moulay Hassan gave them the political power of Morocco south of the High Atlas Mountains. The Glaoui were almost as powerful as the sultan himself. You can still visit the palace, but it is increasingly damaged and is slowly collapsing. In 2010, work was underway to restore the property. If you get the chance on Thursday, visit a traditional souk of the Atlas village. Lunch in the Atlas Mountains. We again cross the Tizi-n-Tichka again to arrive in Marrakech late afternoon / early evening and departure.
