Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech
Pick up in Marrakech and transfer to the Medina (old walled city). Accommodation in a Riad in the Medina of Marrakech.
Day 2: Marrakech city tour with local guide
The city tour includes the following key sites, if time permits, based on a half-day or full-day excursion. Souks Jewish Quarter Bahia Palace. Minaret and gardens of the Koutoubia. Saadian tombs. Koranic school Ben Youssef. Apothecary (Berber pharmacy of spices, herbs and oils). Majorelle Gardens with a beautiful museum of Amazigh (Berber) costumes and jewelry. Half day free to enjoy the night in Jamaa el Fna square. Accommodation in the Riad
Day 3: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Gorges of the Dades
At 8 in the morning we will meet at your Riad or hotel and drive over the port of Tizi n’Tichka (2,260 m above sea level), the highest mountain pass in Morocco. We will have time to stop and enjoy breathtaking scenery, have a freshly squeezed coffee and orange juice while enjoying magnificent views of the mountains and Berber villages. We will take a guided tour of Ait Benhaddou, a World Heritage Site, one of the most spectacular ksours (fortified villages) in Morocco that was once on the route of the Transaharian caravans while crossing the Atlas towards the fondouks of Marrakech. (This famous Kasbah was used as a backdrop for more than 20 movies). We will pass through the city of Ouarzazate and continue towards the Valley of the Roses (where the roses bloom in April and May), the Skoura Palm Grove with its authentic Kasbah of the s. XVII, the valley of a thousand Kasbahs and the Dades gorge. Dinner and accommodation in a charming traditional hotel.
Day 4: Dades Gorge – Todra Gorge – Merzouga
Departure in the morning towards the Sahara Desert (Merzouga) through the Todra Gorges, where you can take a walk to explore these magnificent and narrow gorges where vertiginous cliffs of pink ocher frame a crystalline and fresh river. Then we will go to Erfoud through the palm grove of Touroug, where we will stop to eat. Then we will arrive in the city of Erfoud to visit a local fossil craft workshop. Continuing with the fascinating dunes of Erg Chebbi, beautiful expanse of undulating dunes, also known as the Merzouga Dunes, which you will explore by camel. We will spend the night and have dinner in a fun atmosphere in a nomadic store.
Day 5: Merzouga – Risanni – Nomads – Touristic desert tour
In the morning we will visit the town of Khamlia, famous for its Gnawa music; originally from the great African Sahara. We will visit some deserted mines and share a mint tea with Berber nomads in an oasis of palm trees. We will drive through the black desert (Hamada) and along the roads of the DAKAR Rally. Then we will go to Rissani, where you can walk through the most authentic and traditional souk in Morocco, and the largest in southern Morocco. It is sold with all kinds of crafts, food and animals. Market days are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. We will eat madfouna (Berber stuffed pizza) at the home of a local family. We will return to the dunes of Merzouga in the afternoon, where we will ride camels to spend the night in a camp equipped with music in the middle of the Sahara. This is a great opportunity to make beautiful pictures of sunset and sunrise. At this time, we will explore the secrets of the Sahara and its unlimited horizons. We will spend the night in nomadic Berber tents.
Day 6: Merzouga – Rissani – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate
If you get up early enough, you will see the spectacular sunrise, when the color of the dunes and the shape of their shadows combine in an incredible view. We will continue our trip to Rissani, where we will walk through its famous souk, the most authentic and traditional, and the largest in southern Morocco, which markets with all kinds of crafts, food and animals. We will continue to the Draa Valley through the town of Tazzarine (presented in the movie «Babel»). We will leave for the wild desert to have a picnic under the shade of an acacia (“wild cooking” class included). In the afternoon, the trip will take us along the old caravan route to discover the true Draa Valley, with its huge palm trees and ancient villages. Our day ends in Ouarzazate. Dinner and accommodation in a lovely Riad.
Day 7: Ouarzazate – Telouet – Marrakech
Today, after breakfast, we continue to Ouarzazate, known for its film studios that have hosted many international film productions and is also known as the «Hollywood of Morocco». We follow our route along the Ounila Valley and just 40 km from the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, we will see the Kasbah of Telouet, an ancient route of the Sahara caravans over the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech. It was the seat of power of the El Glaoui family, King Moulay Hassan gave them the political power of Morocco south of the High Atlas Mountains. The Glaoui were almost as powerful as the Sultan himself. You can still visit the palace, but it is increasingly damaged and slowly collapsing. In 2010, work was being done to restore the property. If you have the opportunity on Thursday, visit a traditional souk in the Atlas village. Food in the Atlas Mountains. We cross the Tizi-n-Tichka once more to reach Marrakech late in the afternoon / early evening and departure.
