Duration: 4 days
From: Fez
To: Fez
Day 1
Fez – Ifrane – Cedar National Park – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert
The starting point of this tour is usually the city’s airport, although we can arrange pick-up from other locations, such as your hotel. In any case, our staff will pick you up punctually to begin the journey right away. A English-speaking driver will be at the wheel of a comfortable, private vehicle.
From there, we’ll head south, and soon the Middle Atlas Mountains will come into view. This mountain range, with peaks rising over 3,000 meters above sea level, is home to many places worth visiting and admiring.
Our first stop is in the city of Ifrane. At first glance, you’ll understand why it is known as the Switzerland of Morocco – its green surroundings and gable-roofed buildings evoke the landscapes of other latitudes, such as the European Alps.
The next point of interest on the route is Ifrane National Park, also known by two popular names: the Cedars Park or the Monkey Forest, as both are abundant here. These trees create a dense and vast green area in the landscape and provide the perfect habitat for Barbary macaques, the only primate species found north of the Sahara, making them a true symbol of the country.
After exploring this protected natural area, we will cross the Middle Atlas and, descending its southern slopes, observe how the landscape becomes more arid. This signals that the desert is near, which we will reach by passing through the Ziz Valley.
Following the natural route that runs alongside this river, we will arrive in Erfoud, a small desert town internationally famous for the important fossils discovered here, including some dinosaur remains.
About 40 km beyond Erfoud, our road from Fez leaves the asphalt as we reach the town of Merzouga. Here, we will hop on camels for an excursion through the dunes of Erg Chebbi, some of the most iconic in the Sahara Desert. This two-hour ride will be unlike anything you’ve experienced before and will end at our tented camp.
Upon arrival, you will be welcomed with traditional Berber tea. As night falls, an army of stars will fill the sky, shining brighter than anywhere else in the world due to the absence of light pollution and clouds. Undoubtedly, it’s an unbeatable way to end the day, as you’ll spend the night in Berber tents with total comfort.
Day 2
Merzouga Desert – Khamlia – Desert Nomads – Merzouga Desert
On the second day of this journey from Fez to the desert, we will experience several unforgettable moments. The first will be the majestic sunrise over the dunes of Erg Chebbi—a spectacle of light and silence unlike anything else in the world.
After sunrise, we will have breakfast at the tented camp before heading to Khamlia, better known as “the village of the blacks.”
In this village, we will discover an ancient tradition firsthand: Gnawa music, performed by the descendants of slaves from Sudan who were brought here centuries ago.
In their genes, they carry the percussion rhythms and deep sensitivity for this tribal music, which has been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It’s an honor that will be easy to understand once we witness one of their live performances.
Once this experience is over, we will hop into our SUVs to drive along desert tracks once used by racers in the Paris-Dakar Rally. Along the way, we will pass through abandoned French and Berber villages, as well as khol mines that were exploited decades ago to extract this valuable raw material for the cosmetics industry.
We will also stop at a strategic high point to take in the vastness of the Erg Chebbi dunes.
There will still be time to visit a community of desert nomads who, despite gradually settling down, continue to maintain the traditions and customs of their ancestors. We will meet them and learn about their way of life in such an inhospitable environment.
At the end of the day, we will return to our hotel accommodation in the Merzouga desert, where dinner will be included. There, the same star-filled sky will bid us goodnight before we go to sleep.
Day 3
Merzouga Desert – Fez
The third day of this journey begins with the magic of waking up in the middle of the desert, in unique accommodation where breakfast is included. After enjoying breakfast and spending two unforgettable days among the dunes of Erg Chebbi, it’s time to begin the journey back.
We will return along the same route we took on the first day, traveling from Fez to the desert, but this time in a more direct way with the intention of reaching this Imperial City as soon as possible.
This will give you the afternoon free to get your first glimpse of the city, serving as a preview of the guided tour planned for the next day. In the evening, you will stay in a charming Riad in the heart of the city center, with all the main monuments and points of interest within easy reach.
Day 4
Fez – Airport
One of the advantages of this 4-day tour from Fez to the desert is that it allows plenty of time to explore this spectacular city, whose historic Medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After breakfast, you will meet our official local guide for a guided tour of the historic center.
Highlights of the itinerary may include the Karaouine Mosque and University (considered one of the oldest in the world), Nejjarine Square and its fountain, the Bou Inania Madrasa, and other charming spots.
In fact, it is one of the largest Medinas in North Africa, with different neighborhoods, each having its own character. Notably, the Tanneries. The Mellah (Jewish quarter) and the Royal Palace, with its striking gilded bronze doors, are also common stops for travelers with more stamina.
The itinerary will be tailored to the group and, in particular, to the departure time of the return flight, which is usually scheduled for the afternoon. At the agreed time, our driver will pick you up for transfer to the city airport.
Our services will conclude at the terminal, but we’ll say goodbye with the hope of accompanying you again on another tour of the country—whether starting in Fez or other cities like Marrakech, Tangier, or Casablanca.
